Exciting Dance Classes for 2 to 6 Year Olds

The best pre-school dance programmes found anywhere locally!

Our philosophy for our preschool pupils is that they should be allowed to love dance and performing arts.  We have hand picked the preschool programmes and award schemes which are the best match for our school.  At this age we want to encourage them in the most creative, rewarding and friendly ways as possible.  All SPA pupils are invited to participate in school shows (the next one being in Camberley Theatre) and BTDA medal examinations relevant to their genres in addition to any other opportunities offered in their classes.

All classes are taught by fully qualified teachers with enhanced DBS checks and first aid qualifications.  See the About page for more information.

Melody Movement with Melody and Milligan Bear (Ages 2 to 4)

Our Melody Movement with Melody and Milligan Bears is our very first entry class for preschool dancers.  It is an introduction to dance and performance and includes the official licensed award scheme.  Your child gets a starter folder when they enrol (including a surprise little gift from their favourite bear).  All further stickers, cards and 12-weekly medal are included in the fees so that no child misses out on celebrating their love for dance.  Medals are progressive so that in their first year they work from bronze to gold medal and, if they haven’t moved up to the next classes, they work through levelled rosettes.

GREAT FOR BOYS TOO: If boys (or girls) prefer, they may have the Milligan Bear branded cards and medals.  All class themes appeal to all genders and interests.

A typical class includes warm up dances, followed by a story depicting something exciting that Melody or Milligan Bear got up to that week, followed by dances and exercises to re-enact our story leading to a sticker at the end of class to represent our theme for the week.  No two classes are ever the same and there will always be something to inspire your child's imagination - whether we are exploring space, re-enacting a fairy tale, flamenco dancing in Spain or pretending to be in the ballet.  Melody Movement is a licensed award scheme and therefore we have fully adapted and integrated this class into our wider Surrey Performing Arts experience.  This means that we have also included class time to so that pupils may join us for our formal medal test examinations and participate in school shows and events.

This class leads into First Ballet and First Tap and Modern classes (see below) and from age 3 pupils may enrol onto our AcroDance Preschool class (see below).

First Ballet, Tap & Modern (Ages 4 to 6)

First / Foundation Ballet: Over each term (12 weeks) pupils work towards the following awards: Snowdrop, Bluebell and Primrose Medals by collecting the special stickers on their Melody Bear cards.  There is also a second year programme (Foundation Ballet) for pupils who aren’t ready or not quite old enough to move up after one year.  Special Milligan Bear variations are available for boys.   Additionally we invite all pupils in this class to enter their BTDA Rose Cup Awards during performance test season to introduce them to examinations and pupils begin learning the ISTD Primary Classical Ballet syllabus.  In this class we are ensuring that pupils have mastered the pre-requisite skills of Junior Ballet, but do so in a creative and imaginative way.  We find that this foundation training helps pupils transition smoothly into our Junior Ballet and that these pupils progress in their graded training much faster than those who start Junior Ballet as a beginner.

First / Foundation Tap and Modern: Over each term (12 weeks) pupils work towards earning a metal pin badge.  First year pupils earn their Jump badges and second years earn their Leap badges.  The class join Melody Bear to look at ways we learn and the exciting syllabus develops skills through stories and creative exercises.  Ideas explored include learning to say greetings in different languages and dancing to music from around the world or from decades from history.  This class is combined with Pre-Primary Tap and Primary Modern syllabus work.  Additionally we invite all pupils in this class to enter their BTDA Rose Cup Awards during performance test season to introduce them to examinations and optionally they may take ISTD graded examinations in Tap and Modern.  As with our first ballet training, we our creatively teaching foundation skills and footwork in preparation to move into our Junior Tap & Modern class with ease.  This is the best way at giving pupils a head start at learning their tap and modern vocabulary so that they progress through their higher training faster than pupils who start at a later age.

GREAT FOR BOYS TOO: If boys (or girls) prefer, they may have the Milligan Bear branded cards and medals.

Almost all parents enrol their children onto both First Ballet and First Tap and Modern classes so that preschool children have experience in all 3 major dance genres.  When pupils graduate (by approximately aged 6) we have a variety of classes on our timetable that they will be well equipped to enrol on.

Pupils may also enrol onto our AcroDance Preschool class which follows the Acrobatic Arts Syllabus (see below).

This class leads into Junior Ballet, Junior Tap and Modern, Acrobatics and Drama and Musical Theatre classes.

Acrobatics Dance Pre School (Ages 3 to 6)

Our Acrobatics classes are a fusion of dance and gymnastics.  We follow the Acrobatic Arts syllabus and incorporate their licensed AcroDance Pre school scheme into our classes (including report cards, etc.)

Training in both dance and acrobatics is required to master this genre. Acro technique includes balancing, limbering, tumbling and partnering, based in flexibility, contortion and strength.  Therefore we highly recommend that pupils take at least 1 dance class in addition to this class.

In addition to being taught the AcroDance Preschool Acrobatics Arts syllabus by a certified Acrobatic Arts teacher, pupils are invited to take their BTDA Acrobatics Rose Cup awards and perform in our school shows.

This class leads into Junior Ballet, Junior Tap and Modern, Acrobatics and Drama and Musical Theatre classes.
