Aims of Surrey PA

SPA offers exciting opportunities and classes in dance, drama and musical theatre with the purpose of enriching, exciting and inspiring pupils so that they may reach their full potential in performing arts.  Whether our pupils enjoy the performing arts for recreation or as a basis for professional careers we are here to nurture their talents.  We are very uniquely placed to offer pupils a rich timetable that takes both dance and drama very seriously but still maintaining a friendly and practical environment.

100% Exam Success

Our pupils have the opportunity to take dance examinations with the Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) in Tap, Modern and Classical Ballet.  Our drama & musical theatre pupils have opportunities to take London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) graded examinations in all drama subjects, all speech subjects and musical theatre.  Additionally British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA) Medal Examinations are offered to all pupils in all subjects.

Shows & More

Giving pupils an opportunity to perform is very important and that is why we put together regular school shows as well as getting involved with other opportunities such as the annual National Tapathon, guest show appearances and arranging performing arts trips.

We are also happy to consider coaching select pupils for festival work.

Miss Katherine Clinch AISTD

I started dancing at the age of 3 at Carmichael Theatre Arts in Telford, Shropshire. This is were I fell in love with dancing and soon knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I went on to train full time at Merseyside Dance & Drama Centre in Liverpool where I gained my ISTD teaching qualifications in Classical Ballet, Modern Theatre, Tap and National. I also gained my Diploma in Dance and Drama.

After graduating my first teaching job was for the Conservatoire of Dance in the Seychelles where I taught Ballet and Modern for a year. When I return to England I decided I would try my hand at dancing professionally and performed caberet in various countries and on various cruise ships. After two years of dancing I was missing teaching so I decided to come home and persue a teaching career.

Understanding Dance Teacher Qualifications

There are a couple of dance organisations that offer dance teacher qualifications including the ISTD, RAD and IDTA.  All are different.  Currently in the UK there is no legal requirement for someone wishing to teach a dance class to hold a qualification.  Additionally not all dance-teacher qualifications provide full dance teacher status.  For example ISTD advises that you must hold the Level 4 DDE to be a qualified teacher and the Level 3 DDI is a pre-requisite of this.  As a parent myself it is troubling to see so many teachers running schools and classes without the necessary qualifications which is putting our young children's bodies at potential risk, let alone whether they have studied the work they are teaching.
