Aims of Surrey PA

SPA offers exciting opportunities and classes in dance, drama and musical theatre with the purpose of enriching, exciting and inspiring pupils so that they may reach their full potential in performing arts.  Whether our pupils enjoy the performing arts for recreation or as a basis for professional careers we are here to nurture their talents.  We are very uniquely placed to offer pupils a rich timetable that takes both dance and drama very seriously but still maintaining a friendly and practical environment.

100% Exam Success

Our pupils have the opportunity to take dance examinations with the Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) in Tap, Modern and Classical Ballet.  Our drama & musical theatre pupils have opportunities to take London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) graded examinations in all drama subjects, all speech subjects and musical theatre.  Additionally British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA) Medal Examinations are offered to all pupils in all subjects.

Shows & More

Giving pupils an opportunity to perform is very important and that is why we put together regular school shows as well as getting involved with other opportunities such as the annual National Tapathon, guest show appearances and arranging performing arts trips.

We are also happy to consider coaching select pupils for festival work.

Principal
Ms Rebecca Davies-Sandall DDE DDI PCertLAM BSc(Hons) MBTDA LSDE AAC

Rebecca founded Surrey Performing Arts in 2013 after having been dancing and singing from an early age.  She has studied at The Arts Educational School, Guildford School of Acting, The Valerie School of Dancing, Songtime Theatre Arts and The Linda Sweetzer Dance Teacher College (where she has studied ISTD Tap, Modern and Imperial Classical Ballet teaching).  She has many years of performance experience in dance, drama and musical theatre and is a regular choreographer and guest teacher at other schools.  She is a qualified and registered ISTD dance teacher and LAMDA speech and drama teacher.  Additionally she is licensed to teach the Melody Movement Early Learning syllabi from Jill Bridger and was trained by Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite from Strictly Come Dancing as a FitSteps instructor.

Rebecca studied for her teaching examinations in Tap and Modern with Linda Sweetzer (well-known fellowship and examiner to the ISTD) and Ballet with Bev Rand (well-known fellowship and examiner to the ISTD).   Rebecca holds the highest LAMDA grade and Advanced Tap (Advanced 2 with Distinction) and Modern ISTD grades.

Rebecca has made a point to study safe training for pupils with hypermobility issues.  She is also a parent to an ASD child, has been a home educator and is familiar with LGBTQ+ barriers to dance.  This real-world experience and knowledge helps make Surrey Performing Arts as tolerant and understanding as possible and implement practical teaching methods to all.

Understanding Dance Teacher Qualifications

There are a couple of dance organisations that offer dance teacher qualifications including the ISTD, RAD and IDTA.  All are different.  Currently in the UK there is no legal requirement for someone wishing to teach a dance class to hold a qualification.  Additionally not all dance-teacher qualifications provide full dance teacher status.  For example ISTD advises that you must hold the Level 4 DDE to be a qualified teacher and the Level 3 DDI is a pre-requisite of this.  As a parent myself it is troubling to see so many teachers running schools and classes without the necessary qualifications which is putting our young children's bodies at potential risk, let alone whether they have studied the work they are teaching.
